The Brief
Phil Sidman project managed this contract with his brief being to:
- To manage fire safety aspects associated with a large construction site
- To manage, train and develop a large fire team to provide an operational response to any incidents of fire on the site
- To give practical day to advice to contractors working at the site and other site projects relating to fire safety issues
- To liase with the local fire authority to ensure fire and life safety systems are available for their use during an operational incident
- To chair regular construction fire coordination meetings and participate in fire leadership groups
Key issues
- Achieving a reduction in the number of Fire Brigade attendances to the site
- Managing the fire risks such as hot work, combustible substances and flammable materials associated with the work at a large construction site
- Managing a dynamic fire evacuation strategy
- Ensuring essential fire safety features such as means of escape, fire alarm strategies are maintained during the construction phase
- Addressing fire issues related in the change from a terminal building under construction to live terminal buildings
Key deliverables
- Delivering fire safety training packages to site personnel
- Writing fire plans and undertaking fire risk assessments to ensure compliance with current fire safety legislation
- Undertaking fire safety audits of all site projects
- Ensuring that the project fire insurers are satisfied with the level of fire safety and fire risks at the site
